A Guide to Procrastinating

A friend has come to grips with the fact that life is short. He has resolved to give up procrastinating. Give up procrastinating? When, I wonder, did he ever procrastinate? Over what did he procrastinate? I suspect that most of the time he has done what he was supposed to do when he was supposed to do it. Day in and day out, a responsible man, the kind of person who actually does what he says he will do. I also suspect that he has always had to deal with a long list of supposed-to-do things. Day in and day out, a busy man. If he postponed filling out his time sheets for a day to play golf with a few buddies, did he think he was procrastinating? Is that the kind of procrastinating he plans to give up?

What if my friend wasn't that kind of person at all? What if he did what he wanted to do when he wanted to do it? Day in and day out, the kind of person who actually does what he yearns to do, a busy man with a long list of activities yet to be experienced. If he postponed a day of playing golf with his buddies to fill out his time sheets, did he think he was procrastinating? Is that the kind of procrastinating my friend plans to give up?

And what does his wife think about this new resolution? Was one of her reasons for marrying him her enchantment with his particular style of procrastination? Could be.

My friend, before you give up procrastinating, you really do need to decide what kind of procrastination you plan to give up. And don't forget to check with your wife before doing anything drastic.
